Dhyanam
Puja begins with meditation of Lord Ganesha – Perform Dhyana Mudra (palms in lap, right hand on top of left, thumbs touching) while meditating before the already installed Shri Ganesha Murti.
उद्यद्-दिनेश्वर-रुचिं निज-हस्त-पद्मैः पाशांकुशाभय-वरान् दधतं गजास्यम् । रक्ताम्बरं सकल-दुःखहरं गणेशम्, ध्याये प्रसन्नमखिलाभरणाभिरामम् ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

I meditate on Lord Ganesha, the remover of all sorrows, who is clothed in red garments, whose body shines like the rising sun, who holds noose, goad, blessing, and boon in His hands, and who is adorned with beautiful ornaments, radiant and smiling.

udyat-dineśvara-rucim nija-hasta-padmaiḥ pāśa-aṃkuśa-abhaya-varān dadhatam gaja-āsyam rakta-ambaram sakala-duḥkha-haram gaṇeśa-mdhyāye prasannam akhila-ābharaṇa-abhirāmam . , ..

Upachar 2

Avahanam
After Dhyana of Shri Ganesha, chant the Mantra in front of the Murti while showing Avahan Mudra (palms joined, thumbs folded inward) to invite Lord Ganesha.
आगच्छ देव-देवेश! तेजोराशे गणपते । क्रियमाणां मया पूजां गृहाण सुर-सत्तम । ॥ श्रीमद्-गणपति-देवम् आवाहयामि ॥

PADACHEDA

आगच्छ देव-देवेश-तेजः-राशे गणपते क्रियमाणाम् मया पूजाम् गृहाण सुर-सत्तम-श्रीमत्-गणपति-देवम् आवाहयामि! । । ॥ ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

O Lord of Lords, glorious Shri Ganesha, worshipped by the Gods, please come and accept the Puja I offer. Thus, I invoke You.

TRANSLITERATION

āgaccha deva-deveśa-tejaḥ-rāśe gaṇapate kriyamāṇām mayā pūjām gṛhāṇa sura-sattama-śrīmat-gaṇapati-devam āvāhayāmi! . . .. ..

Upachar 3

Pushpanjalih
After invoking Shri Ganesha, take five flowers in Anjali Mudra (palms joined, holding flowers) and place them before the Murti to offer a divine seat.
नानारत्न-समायुक्तं कार्त-स्वर-विभूषितम् ।आसनं देव देवेश! प्रीत्यर्थं प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥ ॥ श्रीगणेश-देवाय नमः आसनार्थे पञ्च-पुष्पाणि समर्पयामि ॥

PADACHEDA

नाना रत्न-समायुक्तम् कार्त-स्वर-विभूषितम् आसनम् देव देवेश-प्रीति-अर्थम् प्रतिगृह्यताम् श्री-गणेश-देवाय नमः आसन-अर्थे पञ्च-पुष्पाणि समर्पयामि ।! ॥ ॥ ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

O Lord of Lords, please take the seat decorated with gold and various jewels for Your pleasure. Thus, I offer five flowers as Your seat.

Swagatam
After offering the floral seat to Shri Ganesha, chant the Mantra with folded hands to welcome Him respectfully.

Padyam
After welcoming Shri Ganesha, offer Him water to wash His feet while chanting the prescribed Mantra with devotion.
पाद्यं गृहाण देवेश सर्वक्षेमसमर्थ भोः । भक्त्या समर्पितं देव गणपते! नमोऽस्तु ते ॥

PADACHEDA

पाद्यम् गृहाण देवेश सर्व-क्षेम-समर्थ भोः भक्त्या समर्पितम् देव गणपते नमः अस्तु ते । ! ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

O Lord of Lords, doer of welfare, I offer You water to wash Your feet with full devotion. Kindly accept it, O Shri Ganesha. I bow before You.

TRANSLITERATION

pādyam gṛhāṇa deveśa sarva-kṣema-samartha bhoḥ bhaktyā samarpitam deva gaṇapate namaḥ astu te . ! ..

Upachar 6

Arghyam
After Padya offering, give water for head Abhishekam to Shri Ganesha while chanting the sanctified Mantra.
नमस्ते देव देवेश! नमस्ते धरणी-धर । नमस्ते सर्वनागेन्द्र नमस्ते पुरुषोत्तम । गन्ध-पुष्पाक्षतैर्युक्तं फल-द्रव्य-समन्वितम् । गृहाण तोयमर्घ्यर्थं परमेश्वर वत्सल! ॥ श्रीगणेश-देवाय नमः अर्घ्यं समर्पयामि ॥

नमः ते देव देवेश-नमः ते धरणी-धर-नमः ते सर्व-नाग-इन्द्र नमः ते पुरुषोत्तम-गन्ध-पुष्प-अक्षतैः युक्तम् फल-द्रव्य-समन्वितम् गृहाण तोयम् अर्घि-अर्थम् परमेश्वर! । । । ! ॥ ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

O Shri Ganesha, sustainer of the earth, support of the universe, I salute You. Kindly accept the water for head Abhishekam, mixed with sandal, flowers, rice, fruits, and liquids. Thus, I offer Arghya to You.

Gandha-Samarpanam/Chandana-Samarpanam
Offer Chandan (sandalwood paste) to Shri Ganesha while chanting the prescribed Mantra full of reverence.
श्रीखण्डं चन्दनं दिव्यं गन्धाढ्यं सुमनोहरम् । विलेपनं गणपते! चन्दनं प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥ ॥ श्रीगणेश-देवाय नमः चन्दनं समर्पयामि ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

O Shri Ganesha, please accept the delightful and fragrant sandal paste to anoint Your body. Thus, I offer sandal paste.

Upachar 8

Pushpa-Samarpanam
Offer fresh flowers to Shri Ganesha while chanting the sanctified Mantra with utmost devotion and sincerity.
यथा-प्राप्त-ऋतु-पुष्पैः बिल्व-तुलसी-दलैश्च । पूजयामि गणपते! प्रसीद मे सुरेश्वर! ॥ श्रीगणेश-देवाय पुष्पं समर्पयामि ॥

PADACHEDA

यथा प्राप्त-ऋतु-पुष्पैः बिल्व-तुलसी-दलैः च पूजयामि गणपते प्रसीद मे सुरेश्वर-श्री-गणेश-देवाय पुष्पम् समर्पयामि । ! ! ॥ ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

O Shri Ganesha, I worship You with flowers of the season, with Vilva and basil leaves. O Lord of Lords, bless me. Thus, I offer flowers.

TRANSLITERATION

yathā prāpta-ṛtu-puṣpaiḥ bilva-tulasī-dalaiḥ ca pūjayāmi gaṇapate prasīda me sureśvara-śrī-gaṇeśa-devāya puṣpam samarpayāmi . ! ! .. ..

Dhupa-Samarpanam
Now offer Dhoop (incense) to Shri Ganesha while chanting the prescribed Mantra full of devotion and respect.
वनस्पति-रसोद्भूतो गन्धाढ्यः सुमनोहरः । आघ्रेयः सर्व-देवानां धूपोऽयं प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥ ॥ श्रीगणेश-देवाय नमः धूपम् आघ्रापयामि ॥

PADACHEDA

वनस्पति-रस-उद्भूतः गन्ध-आढ्यः सु मनोहरः आघ्रेयः सर्व-देवानाम् धूपः अयम् प्रतिगृह्यताम् श्री-गणेश-देवाय नमः धूपम् आघ्रापयामि । ॥ ॥ ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

Kindly accept this beautiful, fragrant incense made from tree resin, worthy of the Gods. Thus, I offer incense to You.

Dipa-Samarpanam
Now offer Deepa (lamp) to Shri Ganesha while chanting the Mantra, illuminating His presence with divine light.
साज्यं त्रिवर्ति-संयुक्तं वह्निना योजितं मया, दीपं गृहाण देवेश! त्रैलोक्य-तिमिरापहम् । भक्त्या दीपं प्रयच्छामि देवाय परमात्मने । त्राहि मां नरकात् घोराद्दीपोऽयं प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥ ॥ श्रीगणेश-देवाय नमः दीपं दर्शयामि ॥

O Lord of Lords, accept the ghee lamp I have lit with a cotton wick, which removes darkness from the three worlds. Thus, I offer Deepa to You.

sa ājyam trivartī-saṃyuktam vahninā yojitam mayā dīpam gṛhāṇa deveśa-trailokya-timira-apaham bhaktyā dīpam prayacchāmi devāya paramātmanā trāhi mām narakāt ghorāt dīpaḥ ayam pratigṛhyatām śrī-, ! . . .. .. ..

Upachar 11

Naivedya-Samarpanam
Now offer Naivedya (food) to Shri Ganesha while chanting the Mantra as a sacred act of offering sustenance.
शर्करा-खण्ड-खाद्यानि दधि-क्षीर-घृतानि च । आहारो भक्ष्य-भोज्यं च नैवेद्यं प्रतिगृह्यताम् । ॥ श्रीगणेश-देवाय नमः यथांशतः श्रीगणेश-देवाय नैवेद्यं समर्पयामि । ॐ प्राणाय स्वाहा । ॐ अपानाय स्वाहा । ॐ समानाय स्वाहा । ॐ उदानाय स्वाहा । ॐ व्यानाय स्वाहा ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

Kindly accept this meal of sweets, milk, curd, and ghee, meant for the five vital airs of the body — Prana, Apana, Samana, Udana, and Vyana. Thus, I offer Naivedya to You.

Achamana-Samarpanam/Jala-Samarpanam
Now offer water for Achamana to Shri Ganesha while chanting the Mantra to purify the mouth after Naivedya.
ततः पानीयं समर्पयामि इति उत्तरापोषणम् । हस्त-प्रक्षालनं समर्पयामि । मुख-प्रक्षालनम् । करोद्वर्तनार्थे चन्दनं समर्पयामि ।

After Naivedya, I offer water for drinking and Achamana — for purification of mouth, hands, and face, along with sandal paste for anointing.

Upachar 13

Tambula-Samarpanam
Now offer Tambula (betel leaf with nuts) to Shri Ganesha while chanting the sanctified Mantra reverently.
पूगीफलं महद्दिव्यं नागवल्लीदलैर्युतम् । कर्पूरैलासमायुक्तं ताम्बूलं प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥ ॥ श्रीगणेश-देवाय नमः मुखवासार्थं पूगीफल-युक्तं ताम्बूलं समर्पयामि ॥

PADACHEDA

पूगी-फलम् महत् दिव्यम् नागवल्ली-दलैः युतम् कर्पूर-एला-समायुक्तम् ताम्बूलम् प्रतिगृह्यताम् श्री-गणेश-देवाय नमः मुख-वास-अर्थम् पूगी-फल-युक्तम् ताम्बूलम् समर्पयामि । ॥ ॥ ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

O Lord of Lords, please accept Tambula made with betel leaves, refined nuts, camphor, and cardamom. Thus, I offer Tambula for refreshment.

pūgī-phalam mahat divyam nāgavallī-dalaiḥ yutam karpūra-elā-samāyuktam tāmbūlam pratigṛhyatām śrī-gaṇeśa-devāya namaḥ mukha-vāsa-artham pūgī-phala-yuktam tāmbūlam samarpayāmi . .. .. ..

Upachar 14

Dakshina
Now offer Dakshina (gift) to Shri Ganesha while chanting the prescribed Mantra as an offering of gratitude.
हिरण्यगर्भ-गर्भस्थं हेमबीजं विभावसोः । अनन्तपुण्य-फलदमतः शान्तिं प्रयच्छ मे ॥

PADACHEDA

हिरण्यगर्भ-गर्भ-स्थम् हेम-बीजम् विभावसोः अनन्त-पुण्य-फल-दम् अतस् शान्तिम् प्रयच्छ मे । ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

O Lord of Lords, bestower of endless blessings, please grant me peace. Thus, I offer this golden Champak flower as a gift.

TRANSLITERATION

hiraṇyagarbha-garbha-stham hema-bījam vibhāvasoḥ ananta-puṇya-phala-dam atas śāntim prayaccha me . ..

Upachar 15

Pradakshina
Now offer symbolic Pradakshina with flowers, circumambulating Shri Ganesha from left to right while chanting the Mantra.
यानि कानि च पापानि जन्मान्तर-कृतानि च । तानि तानि विनश्यन्ति प्रदक्षिणां पदे पदे ॥ अन्यथा शरणं नास्ति त्वमेव शरणं प्रभो! तस्मात् कारुण्य-भावेन क्षमस्व परमेश्वर ॥

PADACHEDA

यानि कानि च पापानि जन्मान्तर-कृतानि च तानि तानि विनश्यन्ति प्रदक्षिणाम् पदे पदे अन्यथा शरणम् ना अस्ति त्वम् एव शरणम् प्रभो तस्मात् कारुण्य-भावेन क्षमस्व परमेश्वर । ॥ ! ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

May all sins of past and present lives be destroyed with each step of circumambulation. O Lord, I bow in surrender and seek Your mercy. Thus, I offer Pradakshina.

yāni kāni ca pāpāni janmāntara-kṛtāni ca tāni tāni vinaśyanti pradakṣiṇām pade pade anyathā śaraṇam nā asti tvam eva śaraṇam prabho tasmāt kāruṇya-bhāvena kṣamasva parameśvara . .. ! ..

Vandana-Sahita-Pushpanjalih
Now perform Vandana and offer flowers to Shri Ganesha while chanting the sanctified Mantra with deep reverence.
करचरणकृतं वाक्कायजं कर्मजं वा,श्रवण-नयनजं वा मानसं वाऽपराधम् । विदितमविदितं वा सर्वमेतत् क्षमस्व, जय जय करुणाब्धे श्रीगणपते! त्राहि । ॥ श्रीगणेश-देवाय नमः मन्त्र-पुष्पं समर्पयामि ॥

कर-चरण-कृतम् वाच्-काय-जम् कर्म-जम् वा अ श्रवण-नयन-जम् वा मानसम् वा अपराधम् विदितम् अविदितम् वा सर्वम् एतत् क्षमस्व अजय जय करुणा-अब्धे नमः मन्त्र-पुष्पम् समर्पयामि, । , ! । ॥ ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

Whatever sins I have committed through hands, feet, body, ears, eyes, or mind, knowingly or unknowingly, forgive them all. Victory to You, O Shri Ganesha, protect me. Thus, I offer flowers.

Sashtanga-Pranamah
Now offer Sashtanga Pranam, prostration with eight limbs, to Shri Ganesha while chanting the sanctified Mantra.
नमः सर्व-हितार्थाय जगदाधार-हेतवे । साष्टाङ्गोऽयं सुप्रणामः प्रयत्नेन मया कृतः ॥ नमोऽस्त्वनन्ताय सहस्र-मूर्तये सहस्र-पादाक्षि-शिरोरु-बाहवे । ॥ श्रीगणेश-देवाय नमः साष्टाङ्ग-प्रणामं समर्पयामि ॥

Kshama-Prarthana
Now seek pardon from Shri Ganesha for mistakes known or unknown during the Puja while chanting the Mantra.
आवाहनं न जानामि न जानामि विसर्जनम् । पूजाकर्म न जानामि क्षमस्व परमेश्वर ॥ मन्त्रहीनं क्रियाहीनं भक्तिहीनं सुरेश्वर! मया यत्पूजितं देव! परिपूर्णं तदस्तु मे ॥ अपराधसहस्राणि क्रियन्तेऽहर्निशं मया । दासोऽयमिति मां मत्वा क्षमस्व परमेश्वर । विधेहि देव! कल्याणं विधेहि विपुलां श्रियम् । रूपं देहि जयं देहि यशो देहि द्विषो जहि ॥ यस्य स्मृत्या च नामोक्त्या तपो-यज्ञ-क्रियादिषु । नूनं सम्पूर्णतां याति सद्यो वन्दे तमच्युतम् ॥ अनेन यथा-मिलितोपचार-द्रव्यैः कृत-पूजनेन श्रीगणेशदेवः प्रीयताम् । ॥ श्रीगणेश-देवार्पणमस्तु ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

O Lord, I do not know how to invoke, immerse, or worship You. Forgive me. I do not know Mantra, ritual, or devotion. Whatever worship I have been able to do, make it complete. Forgive my sins of day and night. Grant me wealth, beauty, victory, fame, and destroy my enemies. By remembrance and name-chanting of whom, even partial worship becomes complete instantly, I salute that Lord Achyuta.

Raksha-Mantrah
After seeking pardon, chant the Mantra requesting Shri Ganesha to protect you after Shodashopachara Puja.
ॐ रक्ष रक्ष गणाध्यक्ष! रक्ष त्रैलोक्य-रक्षक! भक्तानामभयं कर्त्ता! त्राता भव भवार्णवात् । ॥ अनेन पूजनेन श्रीगणेशः ऋद्धि-सिद्धि-सहितः प्रीयताम्, नमो नमः ॥

ओम् रक्ष रक्ष गणाध्यक्ष-रक्ष त्रैलोक्य-रक्षक-भक्तानाम् अभयम् कर्त्ता अत्राता भव पूजनेन श्री-गणेशः ऋद्धि-सिद्धि-सहितः प्रीयताम् नमः नमः! ! ! । ॥ , ॥

ENGLISH MEANING

O Lord, with the materials available, I have worshipped You as best as possible. Be pleased, O Ganesha. Thus, I offer all worship to You. O Lord of the hosts, protect me. O Protector of the three worlds, protect me. O Giver of fearlessness, save me from the ocean of worldly existence. May Lord Ganesha, pleased with this Puja, grant prosperity and success. To Him I bow again and again.
